Psychological Description
Personality: Jacqueline, or Jack, they don't mind being referred to by either name, is non-binary. They don't make a big song and dance about it, not prone to correcting people if they slip up or make initial assumptions, and is relatively easy going about the whole situation. They haven't always had the best experience since coming out as gender-fluid non-binary and bisexual, but also not experienced the worst of prejudices that they've heard stories of from others. Born and raised a girl for the first few years of her life, they do have a few feminine holdovers, but similarly have a few masculine proclivities from further development and experimentation as a young teenager. They settled into a fluid balance in their late teens. Jack is, at heart, a bit of a rebel. They believe in controlled anarchy to achieve favourable outcomes. Not necessarily selfish, they are a sort of 'social champion' sort, when they see something they don't like.
Relationships: Jack's parents supported their daughter's choices after an initial year or so of resistance; they found it hard to accept their 8 year old could be so certain about having such an 'uncertain' sexuality. It was most difficult for their father, for whom it took longer to understand what it meant, but he always supported them regardless. Their mother did a lot of research early on, and though at times was almost too eager to support the whole process, eventually calmed down and found an appropriate level. She can still be a little over-bearing, however. Jack lives with 3 house-mates in Queens, and enjoys a rich life in the LGBTQ+ and mutant communities there with many friends and acquaintances.
Powers & Abilities: Jack's power is gestalt in nature. When an individual with extra-natural powers (regardless of the nature of their origin) is within a certain proximity of Jack (usually about half a mile) they develop a power similar to theirs. This of course means that Jack also has a limited degree of power sensing, knowing when there is a source of power in their vicinity. When a power develops, Jack also develops an understanding and level of skill with the power, as if this is also unlocked from somewhere within them. A developed power will always manifest at a comparative level of strength to its source-individual's power. Jack can maintain a proximity developed power for as long as the source-individual is within range, which is extended to around a mile once a power is already unlocked. However, Jack is able to take on a more "permanent" power through physical contact with a source-individual this will not depend on proximity. This physical contact can be for as long as anywhere between 30 seconds and 5 minutes, depending on the power (though Jack has yet to find any kind of recognisable pattern as to which powers take shorter or longer). Jack can only maintain one power at a time, either by proximity or contact, and can choose to maintain one they already have or swap it out (though, obviously, this can be a gamble if they don't know what exactly they might get from a new source). A "permanent" power can only last for between 1 and 4 days, however. The powers unlocked in Jack are entirely determined by the individual they are taken from, and will remain the same whenever they meet that same person (though matching their strength level if the individual has increased in power or gotten lazy with them). The powers are usually always a twisted, nightmarish version-of or spin-on the source-individual's, but even if two individuals have the same power Jack's manifestation will most likely be different for each person. For example, Bill and Ben both have hydrokinesis; at the core Jack's developed power will be quite similar in being fluid-based, perhaps, but it might instead be acid or, hell, even lava, and always the same one for Bill, and the same other one for Ben. There is always a physical manifestation of the power Jack currently has, when it is being used, almost always following a horror motif reflecting the twisted/nightmare spin on the "unlocked" power. This change only occurs when the power is being actively used, however, it does not happen whenever there is another source of power nearby, unless the inspired power happens to be of a passive nature and never technically "off". The physical manifestation always includes a cracked maw and sunken eyes and nose like a jack o'lantern, though this appears to be more of a consistent glamour than an actual physical transformation.
Weaknesses: Jack's power has its own limitations, as outlined above. When they don't have a power, Jack is an otherwise perfectly normal human being. If a power develops in Jack as a passive power that is never technically "off", they can experience an uncontrollable transformation into a horror motif. Sometimes this can be significant, other times less noticeable, dependant on the nature of or level of the power in question. However, the jack'o'lantern face always occurs, but as this seems to be more of a glamour than a physical re-structuring, it can be more easily concealed or explained if need be.
Skills: Jack's only particular skill besides those that can present in connection to their power is skate-boarding and free-running. They are quite talented at both, thanks to a youth of practice and pursuit. They are also quite the gifted artist, studying modern visual arts at college in New York City.
Equipment: Jack often rides or carries a skate-board around, and has the usual bits and pieces like a cell-phone, watch etc.
Background: Jacqueline Lanturn was born to Phillip and Bernadette in New Jersey. For the first 8 years of their life they were raised a girl, as is their biology, but around that age Jackie felt that she didn't really identify as a girl. They weren't sure what they identified as. Their parents resisted at first, thinking it just a phase as they were so young, but the more Jackie seemed to struggle and suffer with their identity and feelings, the more they tried to support the choices they wanted to make.
It was hard for Jack's father; he had been raised in an old-fashioned house-hold himself and just didn't understand what was going on. But he saw how his daughter suffered and tried his best to support her any way he could manage. Jackie's mother went the other way, reading, watching and listening to anything to learn anything and everything she could about her child's developing sexual identity.
Jack spent a few years trying to be a boy, and though this made them feel a bit better, to have that freedom, it wasn't quite the right fit either. Jack was 14 when they finally found the name the described how she felt. Non-binary. They shifted to gender neutral pronouns, and was just from then on simply themselves, however that may manifest from day to day. Some days they could be described as more masculine, some days as more feminine, and some days as some sort of mix, mish-mash or just non-specific. But ultimately they were just doing what they were comfortable with any given day without really considering which way it might present them outwardly. They had both boyfriends and girlfriends, intermittently, but was also unfortunate enough to of course experience the inherent bullying and ridicule from both their peers and adults in the community that just didn't get it.
Thankfully, the majority ruled, and they simply just let Jack be Jack, however that might be. They were lucky, compared to a lot of stories they went on to hear as they grew up and became more involved in LGBTQ+ communities.
Jack attended college in New York, studying modern visual art. They live in a flat-share in Queens with 3 close friends (also on various points of the sex/gender scales) and is very comfortable and active in the local LGBTQ+ and mutant communities there, enjoying many friends and acquaintances from varying backgrounds and walks of life.
Jack discovered their powers at 17. They'd met mutants before, a few of them attending some of the LGBTQ+ events they liked to go to, but on the occasion their powers first manifested the mutant they had met was not a nice or friendly person.
Jack had seen the woman around before, hanging around outside bars or other venues their group would host or attend. Jack had assumed she was maybe interested in the group, but too nervous to attend, so decided to give her space and time. Jack would always offer her a friendly smile, and occasionally a wave, but didn't press the matter as every time the woman would turn and rush off.
One night, Jack was alone in an office the LGBTQ+ group she was a member of used to organise social events and run support services etc., and the woman came in. She was clearly nervous and uneasy, looking around the office. They chatted briefly, about the office and the kinds of events and services the group organised, Jack assuming the woman had finally plucked up the courage to ask about being a part of their community. The woman seemed nice enough, if especially nervous and shy, Jack had thought. Until Jack finally asked the question about her sexual orientation. And she snapped. With inhuman strength, the woman swatted Jack across the room, causing them to crash through a desk and impact with a filing cabinet which was left dented from the force of the landing. The woman composed herself, as if coming out of a momentary rage, but seemed to feel no remorse for what she'd done. She'd clearly just killed the poor young person, yet she didn't seem to care. Instead, she started to remove items from her purse. Items to start a fire.
As she lined up a few small canisters and some matches, humming to herself, she stopped at a sound from behind the collapsed desk. When she turned around, she saw the young person standing, pieces of shattered wood falling off of them. When Jack turned around, the woman couldn't help but scream. Jack's face had contorted into a Jack O'Lantern visage, and their skin cracked and grey like cobblestone. There was a small trickle of blood on their forehead, from some form of injury sustained before the power kicked in, but the rest of Jack's body was in the same way golem-like and unharmed. They didn't understand what was happening at first, but when they saw the fire-starting paraphernalia, instinct kicked in. The fight wasn't over quickly, their strengths seemingly evenly matched, but ultimately Jack won out thanks to the added edge afforded by the added physical manifestation of their "unlocked" power.
Until the woman, who turned out to be a violently unstable homophobe, was taken away, Jack and their friends thought the change must be permanent, because it wouldn't go away no matter what they tried. However, once the woman had been gone for a few minutes, Jack realised something felt different about the atmosphere around them, and it was their friends that saw the change happen almost as immediately. Jack was just Jack again. It took a while, experimenting in different ways, for Jack to realise what their power was. They started to attend meetings at mutant groups, usually small affairs because of the prejudice still present, but learned so much. Particularly about the different things they could do from being "activated" by different mutants.
Mostly, Jack uses their abilities to help people in the LGBTQ+ and mutant communities they feel are being treated unjustly, but rarely by doing anything that can really be considered criminal or illegal. They see themselves as more of a social champion with anarchic leanings.
