Name: None
Alias: The Imposter
AKAs: The Faceless One, Imp, Average John/Joan, John/Jane Doe, Joe/Josephine Bloggs, and a many varied myriad of others over the centuries
Physical Description
Hair: The Imposter can have any variety of hair length, styles and colours at any given time. While working with Project 13's team, its typical form is of a distinctly average man or woman (that could easily be brother and sister, based on distinct similarities) that have typical brown hair; short, simple side-parting and sweep as a man; mid-length swept back into a pony-tail as a woman
Eyes:
The Imposter's eyes can appear to be of any human-like variety at any given time. When working with Project 13's team, both male and female forms have un-extraordinary brown eyes.
Ethnicity:
The Imposter itself is an ancient creature of mystery, neither it or others of its kind are entirely aware of the truths of their origins, their existence from the very beginning based on immersing themselves with the current dominant species, and evolving to remain relevantly skilled and able to do so as that dominant species changes. As such, The Imposter can currently appear to be of any ethnicity. In the form used while working with Project 13's team, its male and female forms are of European-Caucasian ethnicity.
Age: How old is the planet and life on it? Are the Imposter and its kind the same age as first known life, or even older still? Or perhaps slightly younger? While working with Project 13's team, the Imposter does slightly vary the age of both its average male and female forms, dependent on need, but most typically hovers around the 30 years old mark.
Build: The Imposter can appear to have any human build it wants to. The male and female forms it uses are of distinctly average builds; not especially fit, but by no means unfit (they do at least appear to be based on the interpretation of 'average' suitable for their purpose).
Uniform: The Imposter's ability to shape-shift curiously includes the fabrication of suitable clothing, if it so desires. In both its male and female forms while working with Project 13's team, the Imposter usually wears grey-blue combat pants, black boots, black turtle-neck and grey-blue long-coat.
Personal Style: The Imposter can adopt any style depending on the form it chooses to take. While working with Project 13's team, it always wears the same attire as is its 'uniform', without variance unless specifically needed for a particular mission or specific task/reason.
Psychological Description
Personality: It is hard to distinguish what is the Imposter's own natural personality is. Over the centuries and more, it has adopted so many. However, it would not be unreasonable to assume that in those moments (more common recently) that it reveals what it is, that the personality that comes to the fore then is most likely its own 'natural' state. Most central to its behaviour is its incredible curiosity, and amusement, particularly in the nature of the human condition. This is probably reinforced by the fact its existence is centred around imitating and ingratiating within any and all human societies. It is often unclear if the Imposter always tells the truth. It claims to, even when stating the most incredible 'facts' from its experience of history, but sometimes it can seem to contradict common knowledge so incredibly, or claim to have been a significant individual in history that you would never have considered possible. Recently, the Imposter has begun to wonder about itself as well, however, realising that it and others of its kind have spent so long being everything and everyone else, they have not at all held on to the knowledge of who or what they really are. This has led to moments of serious introspection, occasional anxiety, and a more focused approach to its own life and existence, or a version thereof, than the lives it has imitated. It does maintain a collection of different identities throughout the world, however. While working with Project 13's team, its personality is most akin to its own 'natural' state of mind, and identity in which it can explore itself without excess concoction of additional traits.
Relationships: The Imposter maintains a myriad of different relationships with a number of different identities. Very few are actually genuine, though all are valued one way or another. It is aware of others of its kind, but they do not typically associate directly with one another as a rule for their kind. Not entirely by choice, it appears to be a natural instinct to not congregate, as this might compromise their natural instinct blend in with society and culture. The Imposter is quite possibly unique, however, possibly the first of its kind to ever reveal its nature (as much as it can) to others outside of its kind. At the very least to the scale that it has, anyway. The Imposter does maintain a genuine relationship with the members of Project 13's team. Its primarily professional, with some personal leanings, but is without excessive pretense laboured by a completely fabricated identity.
Powers & Abilities: The Imposter is a natural infiltrator. Its kind have always existed, and since the beginning of life on Earth have always had the natural ability to shape-shift into the forms of the planet's current dominant species. As far as is known, they do not have their own natural form; the closest thing to this being a kind of 'blank template' version of the current dominant species. This ability is limited to the confines of the dominant species 'typical' spectrum. This allows them to take a form across the spectrum of height, weight etc including some rare and unique extremes, including mimicking amputations and certain deformities, but a single one of the Imposter's kind cannot mimic conjoined twins, as this would still count as mimicking two different individuals, and out of the reach of its abilities. However, if under whatever circumstances, conjoined twins became the dominant form on Earth, it would not be unreasonable to assume they would evolve to be able to mimic this. After all, they were once able to mimic dinosaurs, in theory. To support this base ability, the Imposter also has a suite of low-level psychic abilities to support its ingratiation. It can glean information from those around it, able to call upon details from their memory to ingratiate itself in whatever form its already in. It can also implant false memories to achieve the same goal. The Imposter can also seek out specific memories of an existing person in order to take on their form and identity, but this takes more time and concentration to achieve. Research beforehand is always helpful to bridge the initial gap before it can access the mind of the person their trying to trick. The Imposter can mimic human biology, but does not have to. Its own 'natural' (or as close to) form is like that of fleshy clay. This means it can be outwardly harmed or injured without significant or dire consequence, and can in fact piece itself back together if dismembered. Enough damage or harm can and does hurt the Imposter, but it takes a bit more to not be surmountable one way or another. For example, a dismembered limb will hurt horribly, but without blood loss and with the ability to re-attach (though this can take some time and effort), not a significant concern; a burn (heat or chemical) harms its flesh in exactly the same way it would any other humans, and takes longer to fix through shape-shifting as the tissue is damaged, but does heal quicker than the average humans. The Imposter does not necessarily 'heal' faster, in as much as it more simply reforms itself around injury, if possible.
Weaknesses: Despite its ability to imitate any human or create any human form, the Imposter cannot imitate or create any super-human abilities beyond its own natural ones, and by instinct will not always employ its own ability to 'heal' or prevent 'blood loss' if it needs to keep its ruse up. It typically won't die from its facsimile of blood loss, but it can be very damaging as it is essentially shedding a vast amount of itself made into the form of blood in order to imitate the process.
Skills: The Imposter has lived a VERY long time. It has a myriad of skills and knowledge picked up over millions of existences. There are gaps in its knowledge when the dominant species' of the planet have switched, and it and its kind of undergone their own period of evolution to acclimate, but anything since the dawn of humankind is potentially accessible in its memory. The Imposter, in particular, is a master-manipulator with vast historical, cultural and psychological knowledge and skills. It has lived many a lifetime in various forms of combat over the centuries, and so has a decent working knowledge of combat and military discipline, though this is not central to its personality or identity as such. It has always favoured the creative arts, in truth.
Equipment: The Imposter typically arranges to have access to whatever equipment is most suitable to its current form/purpose, whatever that might be. Over centuries or more in existence across a collection of varied identities, it has arranged for several long-standing estates, investments and family fortunes (either through its own creation, or manipulation) that it can access whenever necessary.
Background: The Imposter's kind don't even know where or when they began, specifically. Only that it was at the same time the first life on Earth came to be. Whether by life they mean the very first walking, swimming or flying creature, or in fact the very first microbe with purpose, is up for debate. Again, they don't even know, though some claim they do. But their claims, about anything, are often up for interpretation and to be taking with a grain of salt.
For the sake of our knowledge and understanding, i can tell you for now at least, that they did exist in the times of the dinosaurs. Their kind have always naturally been able to take on the form of the dominant species, or collection of species, currently 'ruling' Earth. Though interpretation of this is also still up for debate; what constitutes dominance? Our self-perceived dominion over the planet? Sheer numbers? Proliferation? Evolutionary success?
The closest they have ever been known to having a 'natural form' is that of a 'blank slate' version of the current species they imitate, and this remains true even now in the time of humans.
When the dinosaurs were made extinct, or evolved into avians, the Imposter's kind simply underwent their own kind of evolution in order to keep up with the new status quo. And this happened every time the balance shifted. When this happens, there seems to be a loss of some knowledge of their previous state of being, at least in part. The purpose of their existence seems to have always been simply to co-exist through imitation and ingratiation, and learn or entertain their own curiosity and amusement.
The Imposter remembers every human life it has taken on since the advent of Homo Habilis and Australopithecus, or so it claims. It has lived a myriad of lives, taking on millions of roles and identities as culture and society has evolved, often more than one at a time. It has always been aware of others of its kind in existence, occasionally stumbling across them (they have a sense for each other) but never directly interacting as their own kind, only within their concocted identities if they must do in order to maintain their facades. At least to memory since the bipedal human ancestors evolved, they have always had a natural instinct to remain distanced from one another, so that they can fully ingrain themselves in the societies of humans without risk of revealing themselves.
Over the years the Imposter has claimed to have been several many significant individuals. Whether this is true, no one can really say unequivocally. What can be confirmed is that whether through having created them itself, or simply manipulating others, the Imposter has access to several fortunes and estates around the world as though they were its to command.
The Imposter's main driving force throughout its remembered existence has always been curiosity and amusement. Every life it has led, in whatever way it has led it, has been in order to explore new avenues of human existence. Even if that includes possibly being complicit in certain atrocious acts throughout history. If he is to be believed, he claims he has also played a hand in some of the best moments in human history also, so 'even stevens'.
However, in recent decades the Imposter has found its curiosity turning more and more toward itself, and its own kind. This is very unusual, and that much is clear even to itself on the few occasions it has tried to directly interact with its own kind in the way that has always been silently forbidden. It is possible that this is due to the advent of super-humans in the last century, muddying the balance of dominance on Earth. They're human, but not... what process or instinct is it exactly that drives his kind to live the way they do? Is it entirely natural, or is there something else at play? Is it an assumed role rather than a defined trait? How can they be sure when they don't even fully understand where they themselves came from?
As such, the Imposter (to its knowledge) is the first of its kind to (relatively) significantly reveal itself to others. Most notably, a smattering of super-humans and other potentially significant figures in these strange times. In its broadening curiosity, the Imposter is seeking out ways to explore its own identity, if it even has one. While still exercising its usual behaviours and desires, exploring the human condition and the world at large, the Imposter is also seeking to find 'itself' by working with Project 13 and his allies, when it suits it. It finds that it actually cares for some of these people, if only in a sort of professional way, primarily... but it is not an affectation of affection, for once. It doesn't think.
