Name: Samuel Millen
Alias: Hops/Void
AKAs: Sammy/Sam
Physical Description
Hair: Originally blond, short back and sides, styled-messy top. Later, silvery grey, short back and sides, unkempt messy top.
Eyes: Originally blue. Later, black.
Ethnicity: White American
Age: 18 at first appearance
Build: Sam has an average-to-slightly-above athletic build afforded by a healthy pursuit of multiple sports throughout schooling
Uniform: Hops' official x-team uniform consisted of pants, t-shirt and jacket in the usual motif. Void, however, has no uniform.
Personal Style: Originally, typical attire for an every-day young man his age: jeans, boots or trainers, t-shirts or shirts or jumpers etc. Later, Void tends to wear all black, with occasional small accents of different colours. Always dark black jeans and boots, a t-shirt or jumper under a long black coat, and always wears black gloves
Psychological Description
Personality: Hops was a happy go lucky, amiable and amicable young man with time for everyone and a good heart. He was sporty, but not a typical jock; not unintelligent but not exactly MENSA material. Void, however, beaten down by circumstances in his past, and the negative affects of his growing powers, has become jaded, apathetic, cold and isolated; sometimes cruel, but in a constant flux of internal guilt, self-hatred and anger.
Relationships: Hops had many good and strong relationships at Xavier's school. But his growing powers made it difficult to maintain them (sometimes more because of his changing opinion and view of himself). As Void, he was very few friends, only 'colleagues' that he works with and tolerates; despite this, he does still hold an affection for people from his past... that's just not always an easy thing to remember.
Powers & Abilities: Hops had the ability to teleport, leaving behind only a small wisp of dark shadow on each end that didn't register any readings, and very quickly dissipated.
He also had a limited degree of matter and energy perception, though not on quantifiable spectrum; it was so much that he could sense a particular form of matter or energy, at least not a known measurable one, but more some form of underlying wavelength that he could sense the change of either something acting upon it, or it acting upon something else. As his abilities developed, he gained the ability to somewhat manipulate this immeasurable wavelength of matter and energy, but only when touching something. Unfortunately, this only ever seemed to manifest as though he were having a draining or degenerative effect on the person or object, as if entropy were accelerated or its being was being torn asunder. And he didn't always have full control over when it would manifest. By the time he adopted the name Void, and fled from Xavier's mansion, his physicality had changed and his powers had grown further. He now had a greater understanding that his powers involved dark matter and dark energy. He by no means had a significant command over it as though he had a complete elemental affinity; it was more so that he could see and tug at its edges a bit. If dark matter and dark energy make up about 95% of the known/unknown universe, Void only really benefits from about than 0.0002%. Probably much smaller, but that degree of maths is beyond my ken. Small, by universal standards, but nothing to shrug at in the meager body of a man. His ability to "drain" things with a touch became completely uncontrollable, he has now resorted to wearing gloves and long sleeves at all times, though he is able to control the rate at which the dark matter or dark energy are manipulated in and around what he is touching. His teleportation now manifest more like doorways, where he is able to take shortcuts through sub-connections within underlying dark matter and dark energy straits lying beneath our perceived dimension. He also now has what amounts to super-human senses, but not in a straight forward "smell, see, hear, taste, touch" regard; more a feel of disruption in the dark energy and matter around him. The full range of this is unknown, but potentially global with enough concentration (could tie in to the implied connectivity of his teleportation).
Weaknesses: Hops had no significant weaknesses beyond not being a trained combatant, and that his teleportation was limited to what he could see. His true weaknesses came about when his powers evolved. He is unable to physically touch someone without harming them. Even if he slows the rate of his effect in the immediate moment, there's no telling what long-term effects his manipulation of dark energy and matter around them could affect. Later in life, as Void, he is unable to maintain, or even pursue, meaningful or healthy relationships, favouring solitude, which encourages his depression, guilt and self-hatred to broil further. His appearance also makes him stand out in a crowd.
Skills: Other than a general sportiness, though not in any combat disciplines, neither Hops nor Void have any particular skills not simply intrinsic to their abilities.
Equipment: X-team uniform and related gear once upon a time, but later only a Brotherhood issue communicator.
Background: Sammy Millen was born in Oxfordshire, England, and moved to New York with his family at the age of 10. His father was an theoretical physicist working on dark matter and dark energy. A private research consortium under the umbrella of Advanced Idea Mechanics hired him after he published a piece about how dark matter and dark energy could one day be measured and analysed, once modern science and technology had evolved and developed to a point where it could perceive it. His theory espoused the possibility of biological constructs within technology, rather than simply relying on mechanics and cybernetics etc. Unbeknownst to him, Doctor Millen was supporting AIM in illegal experimentation to develop just such a thing by creating a form of computer employing multiple human brains. When he discovered this, he tried to destroy it. And succeeded, at the cost of his own life.
He did not die immediately, he thought himself only injured, potentially poisoned by some unknown chemicals involved in the machinery. He was taken to hospital, where no one could quite identify what was wrong with him. His body was clearly fighting off some sort of degenerative condition being affected upon him by an unknown culprit, but no test seemed able to measure any foreign body or toxin. Sammy and his mother were at his bedside when he died, and Doctor Millen's last act was to hold his son's hand and tell him he was proud of him, and that he loved him.
No one noticed, nor could they have, that in that exchange something else was shared as Doctor Millen's last breath escaped his lips. Some part, or some effect, of what had killed the physicist was passed on to the 10 year old boy, and fused itself with his dormant X-gene. It was not long afterward that his powers began to manifest, and the public attention afforded to Doctor Millen after his heroic self-sacrifice caused Professor Xavier to take notice very quickly and offer him a place at his school.
Sammy has been there ever since.
(Not going to fill in too much else, depending on if we do things any differently this time around)
